Empowering Autistic Employees: A Practical Guide to Onsite Job Coaching

This presentation will discuss how to provide effective onsite job coaching to autistic participants, emphasizing real-world strategies. We will begin by reviewing what autism is, how job coaching works, and how to provide support and training to new job coaches. We will also discuss the many ways that onsite job coaching increases success for autistic participants in the workplace, builds a stronger sense of community, and even benefits neurotypical coworkers. After discussing successful job coaching strategies, we will review a series of story-based scenarios. Each scenario will feature a participant who is experiencing a workplace difficulty which can be alleviated by their job coach. As a group, we will discuss which strategies the job coach could use to successfully remove the workplace barrier. The presentation will end with time for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

  1. To understand how onsite job coaching benefits autistic participants.

  2. To understand how to implement effective job coaching supports in the participant’s workplace.
